SpecialtyCoatings Application Chemist (to be located in Dongguan, China facility)

GENERAL SUMMARY:

This position will bebased in Dongguan,China and may require initialtraining in our North Baltimore, OH USA plant for several weeks during the first3-6 months of employment.

This key role provides internal and external technical supportfor our PVC slush automotive business in China by acting as a technicalresource for our commercial team, developing customized formulations for ourcustomers’ unique requirements, optimizing customer processes and conditions, providingcustomer training on how to most effectively implement PolyOne PVC slushsolutions. In addition, this individualis also responsible for maintaining and developing the technical capabilitiesof PolyOne’s production resources.

Education & Experience:

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering or Plastics Engineering. Advanced degree is preferred.

• Minimum 3 years of experience in material development

Level: 300-400

ESSENTIAL DUTIES &RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Develop new or modified PVC slush powder formulations to satisfy customer needs.

• Evaluate PVC Slush formulations in the laboratory for various specialty coating applications.

• Provide technical assistance to sales and marketing for the growth of specialty coating business.

• Conducts literature and patent search to guide experimentation.

• Interacts with customers to gather information related to the development of new and improved PVC slush powder formulations.

• Provide technical service to specialty coating customers to support SC strategy and projects.

• Participate in resolution of customer complaints and issues.

• Provide technical support to manufacturing to resolve quality and production issues.

• Gathers competitive intelligence on powder coating product technology.

• Documents Technical work in lab notebooks and reports.

• Serve as Technical Lead in POL projects related to specific projects.

• Travel to plants, customers, and suppliers up to 40% required.

• Partner with manufacturing resources to establish product specifications and evaluation of new and alternate raw materials for PVC slush formulations.

• Participate in the planning of projects using PolyOne’s innovation POL pipeline process.

• Operates to PolyOne’s safety standards.

• Capability to travel abroad

• Collaborate with external “partners / supplier” to improve system performance of the PVC Slush (i.e. Foam supplier, laser equipment manufacturer)

• Screening of China raw material market and provide / validate potential alternatives

• Lead technical validation programs at customers

Knowledge, Skills &Abilities:

• Technical background in plastic material and processing

• Detailed background/knowledge of material development process.

• Experience in PVC Slush process is a significant plus.

• PVC formulation, applications, testing, and processing is a significant plus. Other polymer experience including TPE, PE, Nylon helpful.

• Experience to think strategically while working in a team environment

• Experience in powder coating technology is a significant plus.

• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Requires considerable initiative and decision making judgment.

• Detailed oriented, with the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, assess priorities to meet deadlines, recognize workflow and carefully plan for short term and long term projects.

• Ability to interface effectively with internal scientific, engineering and business functions as well as external customers and suppliers

• Proficient skills in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, etc.) and the ability to utilize new software packages as introduced

• Ability to read and understand English to communicate with both internal and external customers. Must possess excellent writing skills. All communication must be thorough and handled with professional expertise.

• Able to carry out assignments with the highest regard for safety and environmental performance

• Use design of experiments, statistics, to solve complex problems.

• Lean Six Sigma experience a plus.
